Does natural selection work?

Natural selection was the mechanism that Darwin proposed for the evolution of biological creatures. He observed that creatures produce o spring with small trait variations. He theorized that the creatures most suited to their environment survived and passed on those traits to their offspring, but the less-fit offspring died. In this way, small changes gave rise to big changes, causing creatures to evolve.

Creationists do not deny that creatures vary, but they point out that this variation does not lead to large-scale evolution, like dinosaurs turning into birds. Natural selection might explain the survival of the fittest, but not the arrival of the fittest. In other words, natural selection can only select from what’s already present. The engine of evolution, the mechanism that provides novel genetic information, would need to lie elsewhere. Darwinists eventually realized this very problem and proposed genetic mutations. But is this a sufficient mechanism? Mutations are either detrimental or near neutral, at best. Beneficial mutations are extremely rare, and very few have ever been documented. The bottom line is that there is no biological mechanism to fuel Darwin’s idea of evolution.
